Scripture: Matthew 26:6-13
Observation: Her Mary comes and takes this expensive perfume and pours it all over Jesus. Why? Why would someone do something like that? Mary made a huge sacrifice to give that gift to Jesus. It was a symbol of her love and commitment to our Lord. He had done such an amazing work in her life and she wanted to be able to give something back. She wanted to show her love for her Savior. Yet the disciples get upset because the perfume could have been sold to help the poor or needy. Jesus corrected their thinking be reminding them of what is truly the most important.
Application: I think a lot of times if we aren't careful we allow ministries and church functions to become a substitute of our relationship with Christ. We should never allow services or ministries to take the place of personal time with God. Mary was an awesome example to us that our first and greatest purpose as followers of Christ is to love and serve Jesus. I know we can get involved with a lot of good ministries, but has that taken the place of my passion for an intimate and personal relationship with God? Am I keeping my personal relationship with God fresh? Or, have I substituted something else for the personal aspect of my relationship with Jesus?
Prayer: Father, you are so amazing. You truly desire personal time with me in spite of all you are in charge of. Help me to always make personal time with you. May I never allow anything to become a substitute for quality time alone with you. I love you Jesus. You are the greatest friend I could ever find. Help me do all I can to make my friendship with you deeper and stronger. Amen!
